Glossary

The terms used across the directory, in plain language.

AI app
A product where an AI model does the core work — you prompt it, it produces something. The main list on this site is made of these.
Parent company
The company that owns and operates an app. ChatGPT's parent is OpenAI; Gemini's is Google DeepMind. We show both, separately.
Valuation
What a company is estimated to be worth. For public companies this comes from market capitalisation; for private ones, from the latest reported funding round or a reported figure.
Market capitalisation
Share price multiplied by the number of shares outstanding, for a company listed on a stock exchange.
Private / n/a
Shown where we have no reliable value to publish — either the company is private and hasn't reported one, or we couldn't verify it.
Unicorn
A private startup valued at $1 billion or more. Many of the highest-ranked entries started as one.
Ticker
The short code a stock trades under, such as GOOGL or NVDA. It appears in the Stock Market column next to the exchange.
Exchange
The market where shares are bought and sold — NYSE and Nasdaq in the US, LSE in the UK, and so on.
Not verified
The parent company isn't in our curated listing registry, so we won't guess a ticker for it.
Monthly users
A rough count of people using a product each month, taken from reported figures where available. Definitions differ between companies, so compare with care.
Freemium
A pricing model: a free tier to get people in, then paid plans for heavier use. Most AI apps work this way.
Subscription
Recurring monthly or annual payment for access, usually with higher limits or better models.
Usage-based
Pricing by consumption — per message, per image, per million tokens — common for developer APIs.
Referral link
A link that carries a code identifying our site. If you sign up through one, the company may pay us a commission at no extra cost to you.
ML platform
The cloud and tooling layer used to build, train and deploy models — GPUs, notebooks, pipelines. Listed on its own page, not in the app directory.
Semiconductor
A chip. The processors that train and run AI models live on the Chips page rather than in the app list.
Foundation model
A large general-purpose model that other products are built on top of, rather than a finished app you use directly.
Agent
An AI product that carries out multi-step tasks on your behalf, rather than answering a single prompt.
